About the IDW
Ready to step into leadership in dynamic coastal environments? This ACA Level 5 Advanced Open Water Coastal Kayak Instructor Development Workshop (IDW) offers experienced instructors the opportunity to level up their coaching and leadership in conditions that meet or exceed L5 certification standards.
Held in Port Angeles, Washington (gateway to world-class open water, surf, and tidal environments) this 3-day workshop is designed for ACA Level 4: Open Water Coastal Kayak Instructor in good standing, having taught and reported at least four Level 4: Open Water skills or assessment courses within the past four years or existing L5 instructors seeking an update.
New candidates must have successfully completed a Level 5: Advanced Open Water Coastal Kayaking Skills Assessment. (Effective 01/01/2025)
Venues & Travel Notes
Candidates should be prepared for independent travel to multiple venues across the region. Candidates may connect to coordinate carpooling. Planned locations include:
Port Angeles, WA (base location)
Deception Pass, WA
Vancouver Island, BC — passport required for border crossing
Hobuck Beach, WA
Conditions
Expect conditions that meet L5 requirements:
Surf ≥ 4 ft (1.2 meters)
Currents ≥ 4 knots
Wind ≥ 15 knots
Waves/chop ≥ 3 ft (1 meter)
