November 14-22 Matanzas Rough Water Training St Augustine, FL $450 for 3 days $750 for 6 days

Our newly bi-annual gathering at Matanzas Inlet on Florida’s Atlantic Coast (Just south of St Augustine, just north of Palm Coast), will be held next November 16-21. We anticipate a variety of conditions suitable for a variety of paddlers at various skill levels wishing to improve their surfing and rough water skills.

20190219_090739.jpg

In a nutshell, the Matanzas event is about improving rough water sea kayak skills, but it’s also about all those things that are involved with “learning” any outdoor skill, like managing risk, learning to read the environment and make reasonable predictions, learning to take maximum advantage of a learning environment in the safest way possible, preparing and practicing for incidents when and if they occur and learning to function supportively and effectively as a team. The formal coursework is partly on water and partly in the classroom, followed by an informal social period in the evenings where the exchange of information continues. Our review of experiences and lessons learned in a group setting while memories are fresh is an important part of each day. Many of our participants say they learn as much from other people’s reported experience as they do from their own.

IMG_1796.jpg

Groups are divided each day by desired challenge level. The Inlet allows for a dialed in approach most days, with lesser challenges available closer in and greater ones further out. We will run ACA L-4 and L-5 updates and certifications concurrently with the other programs. You do not have to be a candidate to participate in the on-water parts of those programs (though you do need to be comfortable in the required conditions). Instructor candidate presentations are open to all attendees.

IMG_1820.jpg

The core group of coaches will be back this year including Tom Noffsinger, Ashley Brown, Jeff Atkins, Debbie Kearney, myself but will also include visiting coaches from the west coast and Great Lakes to include Sean Morely, Laura Zulliger, Trey Rouse and Scott Fairty.

Cost for the event is $150/day, three days minimum or $750 for the full six days. The meeting location is the Shrimper’s Beach House in St Augustine Beach between 7th St, 7th Ave and Atlantic Alley. Accommodation should be sought within walking distance since there is limited parking at the house. There’s a Hyatt two blocks away and a fair number of Airbnb options.

Saturday, October 5 | Intermediate Boat Control (Blending Strokes) Workshop | 9:00 AM to 1 PM | 1-3 students in Horseshoe Cove | $99

Looking to enhance your boat control skills? This workshop is designed to help you improve your stroke technique, by providing you with more tools to develop skills and improve boat control. Whether you are paddling on a local lake or in ocean rock gardens, being able to control your boat is both fun and essential.

Women's Holistic Paddling Clinic | Rogue River (Waitlist Only)

CWWC has teamed up with Sundance Kayak School and their home river, the beautiful Rogue, for this multi-level kayaking clinic! This is a holistic paddling workshop, specifically designed for women interested in learning to kayak, refining skills or taking it to the next level. During the day, your instructors will teach you the paddling skills required to successfully read and navigate rapids. Each night you’ll stay at a beautiful rustic campground, on the banks of the Rogue River in Oregon – far away from the hustle and bustle. Each afternoon, when we return from kayaking, you will have the option of participating in a variety of on-land activities – including river safety, nutrition, yoga and more! We even have a massage therapist on-site to unwind and relax in the evening.

19466491_1046201488847130_2602960870225777903_o.jpg

The Rogue River has lots of different sections to choose from rated class I-IV. Each day we will run a different section of the Rogue River, depending on your goals and skill level. If you have never kayaked before, you will start by being introduced to whitewater kayaks and paddling gear. You’ll discover you can easily get out of the boat and we’ll learn a few basic strokes to put you in control. If you are already paddling and are looking to refine your paddling technique and improve your confidence on the river, you will begin with a kayaking skills assessment and together we’ll identify areas for improvement. Then we’ll head to the section of river that’s right for you!

Holistic Paddling Clinic | Rogue River. 4 Days/3 Nights $725

Rogue river trips are offered through Sundance Kayak School, an authorized BLM Special Recreation Permit holder.

Tent and camping gear rental available. Email us at info@cwwcollective.com for pricing and details.
