(L4) Introduction to Surf Zone (Bolinas)
WHO: This class is intended for sea kayakers AND whitewater kayakers who are looking to familiarize themselves with the surf zone. The April 14th class will be taught by Laura Zulliger.
Prerequisite: L3 Coastal Kayak Skills Development or equivalent, and recent paddling experience. Comfort with wet exits, as well as basic familiarity with both self and assisted rescues, is essential.
WHAT: We will learn about wave dynamics and beach characteristics and how to identify hazards. We will practice launching and landing through the surf zone safely, bracing on breaking waves and holding position.
WHERE: The class will be conducted at the entrance to Bolinas lagoon, one of the best locations for learning to surf in Northern California.
WHEN: In order to get parking we will meet at 8.00AM. Class begins at 8.30AM. We will be off the water by 3.00PM.
WHY: Surf zone training is a crucial step towards all the fun to be had on the open coast and in the surf! For sea kayakers, this is the 2nd in our Progression of Classes designed to prepare you to paddle the open coast. The skills covered in this class are essential for both whitewater and sea kayakers interested in pursuing surf kayaking.

PLEASE NOTE: Cost does not include kayak and gear rental. We offer free demos of Valley Sea Kayaks during our classes in partnership with Performance Paddlesports for most (non-rockgarden) classes. Kayaks must be reserved well in advance.
