Sunday, March 8 | Open Coastal Leadership with David Santaniello & LZ | Marin Headlands Exact Location TBD | $170 per person | 3 - 8 students Max
Do you have the skills to challenge yourself in rough water but still need more confidence? Are you ready to go on more open coast trips but want to make sure you’re an asset to a group and not a liability? This class is designed for those looking to hone their rough water skills in rock gardens, surf, and the open coast. We will do some pre-class homework to develop, share, and workshop potential plans as the forecast evolves.
On the day of the clinic, we will embark on a coastal journey heading out under the Golden Gate Bridge and along the Marin headlands (weather permitting). Using the conditions of the day, we will work on rescues, navigation, group dynamics, identifying appropriate play spots and devising strategies to keep everyone safe and happy. Throughout the day, we'll also place an emphasis on applying intermediate strokes relevant to maneuvering in the open coast environment, as well as water reading and use of environmental features in rock gardens. Your instructor will lead a discussion on risk assessment models and challenge you think about what to do if things do not go to plan.
This class will be co-taught with ACA L5 coach David Santaniello of Kayak Connection and lead organizer of Paddle Golden Gate 2020.
Pre-Requisite: This clinic is designed for paddlers with previous formal training (i.e. a full-day introduction to sea kayaking class plus sea kayak surfing or intro to rock gardening required) and a working knowledge of sea kayak rescue techniques. A roll is encouraged but not required. Students must be able to independently paddle 6-10 miles in one day.
